Frequently Asked Questions

Are housing and meals provided throughout my time at Skylemar?

Yes. All staff receive housing and three meals a day for the entire summer. Details about cabins, roommates and living arrangements will be shared throughout your interview process and during orientation.

Will I be living with kids?

If you’re a male counselor, you’ll live in a cabin with campers, alongside at least one other staff member. Most cabins house 5–8 boys. Some program or support roles may live in staff-only housing.

Are staff orientation and training included within my paid contract?

Yes. Orientation, training sessions and required certifications (such as ropes or lifeguarding) are all part of your contracted employment. Pay begins on your official start date.

Do you offer specialized training?

Yes. Beyond general orientation, we offer role-specific training in areas such as lifeguarding, ropes course, archery, sailing, tennis, golf and more.

What do I need to bring to camp?

Once hired, you’ll receive a full packing list in the Staff Handbook. In general, plan to bring active outdoor clothing, bedding, toiletries and the personal items you’d take to college. If you’re traveling from far away, we can help provide some essentials for the summer.

Do you offer internship credit?

Yes — many colleges accept camp work for internship or fieldwork credit. We’re happy to complete any required forms or evaluations. Check with your school to confirm their specific requirements.

What is a typical daily schedule and how much free time will I get as a staff member?

Camp days are energetic and busy, with responsibilities from wake-up through evening activities. Staff receive structured breaks, and most counselors have every other night off during the main season. We also aim to give everyone one full day off each week. Exact schedules vary by role and age group.

What can I do during my free time and days off?

On your nights off, you’re welcome to relax in the many designated areas on camp. You can also go off camp. On full days off, many staff explore Maine’s beaches, lakes, hiking trails or Portland’s Old Port. You’ll have plenty of options to rest, recharge and enjoy the area with friends.

How long does the application process take?

The full hiring process typically takes 1–3 weeks after you complete your staff application. Timelines may vary based on the role you’re applying for, required interviews and reference checks.

Do you hire women?

Yes. Skylemar is an equal opportunity employer. While camp is for boys, our staff includes talented individuals of all genders across many roles.

What is a typical starting salary?

Starting salary begins at $3,200, with variations based on your age, role, certifications and experience. All staff receive room, board, meals, laundry service and access to staff facilities. Your exact compensation will be outlined in your offer letter.
