Frequently Asked Questions
It’s all about the people, and Skylemar has the best. It starts with a partnership between the greatest parents in the world and the Shepherd family. We’re honored by the trust placed in us personally, and do everything possible to lead Skylemar in ways that make our families proud.
Here’s what our parents would like you to know…
“We could tell from our tour at Skylemar that this camp was a special place. Our son’s first summer at Skylemar exceed our expectations and then some. He had fun every in all the many activities and tried so many new things. He ate a ton of new foods and made lots of friends. He told us when he got home that everyone at camp was so nice and how great it would be if everyone in the world was as nice as everyone at Skylemar. The staff at Skylemar were exceptionally caring and truly got to know our son. We are so grateful to have found this very special place for our child to call home.“
- Naomi Elyachar, Maryland
“No camp cares more. No camp listens more. No camp loves more than Skylemar…I just wish they had a camp for girls too!”
- Eli Gonda, California
“Our son came home from camp and said, “I can’t wait for school to start because the sooner itstarts, the sooner it ends, and the sooner I can get back to Skylemar!”
- Kate Hopek, Pennsylvania
“Skylemar has been a great partner in parenting my boys. I love that my boys have exposure to upstanding male role models in the counselors and older campers, beyond their family members. It’s money well spent knowing that they are learning to be kind, growing from vulnerability and developing leadership skills while practicing how to be great sportsmen.“
- Kathleen Chen, Texas
“Skylemar is a special place where boys are taught how to be men. How to take care of each. How to work with each other. It’s the kind of environment of inclusion and support that everyone should experience.”
- Andrew Vorenberg, Virginia
“We’re incredibly grateful for the positive environment and the lasting memories created at Skylemar. Our son always comes back each summer with more confidence, more independent and more self-awareness.”
- Kristen Quillen, Pennsylvania
“Skylemar is more than a fun summer. The experiences and relationships built over six weeks each summer are truly amazing. It’s a great comfort knowing my son has great role models at Skylemar”.
- Connie Chedester, Alabama
“We believe our son is in the best hands at Skylemar. While people may be nervous to send their child off to camp, and as much as we missed him, there was a peace about us knowing how happy and safe he was at camp. Skylemar is a gift!”
- Morgan Jacobs, Ohio
“Skylemar has achieved an impossible balance in the camp environment at a time when our world feels like we all live in extremes. Effort on the field is celebrated and all are encouraged, but Skylemar recognizes that in athletic competition there is a winner and loser. My boys feel like they can push themselves, make their own choices and make mistakes, but there’s always multiple adults in the background making sure it all goes smoothly without hovering or snowplowing.”
- Elizabeth Zwillinger, California
All types of boys, from across the US and abroad make Skylemar their summer home! The program’s action-packed, and there are ways for all to succeed on and off the fields, courts and lake. Kindness matters most, plus a smile and a willingness to participate.
We’re especially proud of our tremendous leadership team of teachers, coaches and school administrators. These are the child development experts who train and supervise the huge counselor staff, comprised of college athletes and Skylemar alumni.
Each staff member is selected for their desire to make a positive difference for children, combined with expertise in particular areas. Not only do they teach activities during the day, but also live with the kids as well.
There’s one staff member for every two boys at Skylemar, so there are plenty of adults caring for our campers.
Our Medical Directors, Dr’s Jeff and Brooke Vergales, have an incredible team of nurses and doctors ready to help! If ever needed, there are assorted specialists nearby and the closest hospital is just 10 miles away.
We consider Skylemar parents to be our close friends, and we’re always happy to have a personal conversation. Good communication is very important to us.
The Director’s Blog is written nightly, and provides parents with an insider’s view of what goes on at Skylemar. The boys write home several times per week, and have the opportunity to introduce their friends to parents on a video call.
Parents are always welcome to bring their son to and from Skylemar. There are several group flights with escorts, from cities such as Baltmore, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. A coach bus with escorts is offered to those from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
Skylemar campers come from assorted cities both inside and outside of the US. Staff members are available to meet campers at airports in Boston and Portland.
We keep it casual and easy at Skylemar. Most of what’s on the Skylemar Packing Guide are things that your son already has. Laundry is done weekly, so basically it’s a 10 day supply of clothing. We’ll provide full details in the spring.
Nope. Face-to-face friendships and people-powered-fun at Camp Skylemar.
