There’s nothing quiet about Camp Skylemar. Happy cheers and laughter are heard all day and every day. On the courts whistles blow, and balls go ba-bump, ba-bump. At the lake it’s squeals of fun, water splashing and the motorboat’s vrrrooooom!
The decibels reach their highest when the sound is contained within the four walls of our strong and sturdy Rec Hall. There’s so much to talk about, and it’s all super exciting!
For instance, when it’s time for announcements Nick Shep raises his hands high in the air and loudly “Aaaahs” - signaling all to join in doing the same, holding hands high before shouting a resounding group “WHOOSH!” while banging hands down on the table. Next we sing “Happy Birthday”, Skylemar style, which is raucous with big “woos” after every refrain. When the intercamp coach gives his post-game report we cheer wildly in response to any player he mentions.
We’re proud to be loud, and we thought we were loudest. That was until 5:30 this evening, when the spirited ladies of Camp Fernwood arrived!
What fun it was to add to the Rec Hall the giggles and glee of hundreds of girls. Our annual Skylemar/Fernwood All-Camp Social is a special activity we always look forward to.
The weather was stormy, so time for Barney’s Plan B. That meant the younger half of both camps gathered in the Gym for the Counselor Challenge. It was hysterical to watch both sets of counselors compete in fortnight dancing and a whipped cream sort of relay.
Meanwhile, the older kids were in the Rec Hall having dinner. It was your choice of pasta with meat sauce, marinara or alfredo, plus Caesar salad with grilled chicken on top. The cookies Fernwood brought were extra delicious and huge.
Then we rotated, so that the younger kids could eat, and the older ones headed to the Lodge for a social. Ultimately, the skies cleared and those of all ages ended up in front of the Rec Hall, playing lawn games, eating snow cones and hanging out. It was a great, LOUD party.
The girls were terrific, and we’re so glad they came. But there was one change we noticed as soon as they left. Our boisterous boys now seemed very, very quiet.
Heard this today… a bust of a pickup line…
Somehow Theo G ended up on a hayride filled with girls. The pressure was on for him to make conversation, so he gave it his best effort.
Theo: “So did you hear we won Steal the Bacon?”
Only at Skylemar.
