Lots to get done today, despite the hot, windless temperature. Sheets were changed, and beds remade. Laundry bags were stuffed full of clothes to be washed.
GACU was on the schedule for all. That stands for Great American Clean Up. Within one period you take a power shower, head to the infirmary for a health check, and then to “the spa” at the Gazebo. The spa is where you soak your feet and get nails clipped by our amazing Bunksters. The visit even includes that special water with lemon slices.
Tried to play our regular football, soccer, lacrosse and so forth, but it was just too darn hot. Shep renamed our afternoon “Super Soaker Sunday”. Activity periods were canceled, and we instead had a three-way wet rotation.
A group went to Trickey Pond for cool, wet fun. Another went to the Garden area for sprinkler play and snow cones. You can always count on a garden hose to keep kids entertained. The final group went to the hill behind hockey where the 90’ SkySlide was ready to go. You get wet, jump in the air, and slide feet first down the tube. It’s awesome! We had an hour at each station and then rotated.
Also had Clinic Signups. It’s always interesting to hear what’s offered. As you’d expect, lots of guys were drawn towards waterfront activities. There was Take the Plunge Swimming, Try It Out Waterski and Boating & Bracelet Making.
There’s Evolution Strength Building and Free Kick Technique Soccer. Lax 101 covers offense, defense and goalie training. Wide Receiver Football focuses on footwork and agility. Tennis will focus on volleys, and Hockey on positioning. Ash’s Dangerous Clinic is based on activities in “The Dangerous Book for Boys”, like playing marbles and making fancy paper airplanes. The Reading Road Trip is the time to read books in unique places like under a tree, by the lake and so forth. There’s Aloha Golf and Gluten Free Cooking at the SkyDeck (p.s. 10 boys signed up for this!)
Travel Baseball takes place in either shade or water. Basketball Shooting will end with a 3-point shootout. The always popular Drop It Like It’s Hot clinic at the Ropes Course is back by popular demand. They’ll climb 30 feet in the air and drop things like watermelons, water balloons, parachute men and eggs just to see what happens. How’s that for a boy kinda thing?
Pine Cone Auction tonight, for Bunks 1-17. Pirate Sleeveless (who looked a lot like Shep), Pirate Blarney and a parrot named Casco gave everyone 15 minutes to find pinecones all over Sky II. The pinecones became money to use for buying parties. Parties included a World Cup Party in the Staff Lounge, Pajama Party in the Lodge, Tie-dye Party at Hilltop, Movie Making in the Doghouse, a Beach Party on the lake and a trip to two special places: The Red Snow Cabin (Norma & Rich’s house) and Bunk 71 (the Finkelstein home across the lake). Lots more too.
Now, if we could just get the whole camp to sleep in tomorrow. There’s not enough hours in a day!
