Ever pay attention to the credits at the end of a movie? It’s astounding to see how many behind the scenes are necessary to make the show possible. “Titanic” had a list of 2,048 names.
At Skylemar, we have about three dozen. These are our men and women “behind the curtain”, who do whatever it takes to make Skylemar sparkle, even long before others wake up for the day.
Our credits start with Brian who does it all, maintaining 200+ acres and over 55 buildings year-round, inside and out. He was trained by Caretaker Emeritus and Dining Services Director Rich Snow, who knows more about Skylemar than anyone else.
While Brian’s maintenance crew is gassing the four motorboats (no easy task when the tank is near the tennis court and the boats are on Trickey), emptying 50+ trash cans and “safety-checking” eleven vehicles, Rich’s chefs (Martin, Mike, Juan Carlos and Benjamin) are in front of the hot stove. Superman gets his kitchen team in place, setting up the dining room, prepping ingredients and preparing to serve, scrub and clean.
Meanwhile, Myron hops aboard his tractor, and mows all day and every day – his job never ends! Kristen and Kirsten tend their beautiful gardens. The gate guard (Fred or Kris) has completed the night shift and heads home to rest, while Pap Pap’s caregiver (Mary, Eileen or Maddie) arrives.
When breakfast begins, Luis, Adolfo, Hector, David, Victor, Daniel, Alfonso and Cesar stand by to serve. Meanwhile, Brian’s maintenance assistants (Jimmy, Steve, Preston, Cole and Richard) attack the “trouble log”. It’s a never-ending list of things that need to be fixed, thanks to boys accidentally tossing balls into screens or “accidentally” flushing toilets with what shouldn’t go down (like a lacrosse ball for example). Meanwhile, driver Heather, Scott or David is inspecting the bus before it goes out.
The showers are scrubbed top to bottom by Eileen, Heather, Laurene and Becky. These great gals are the ones who secretly re-clean the bathrooms after the boys kinda do so during Inspection.
Speaking of Inspection, by now it's just about time for the day to get going... little do the kids know that the day began hours ago by some of our most important people.
Heard this today…
One of the kids was using the Light House shower, and Shep heard him singing. Of course, lots of people croon while bathing. But this time it was special. He sang “Skylemar You’ll Linger”.
Only at Skylemar.
