The second half of camp is off to a terrific start! The weather’s still quite muggy, but that’s ok by us. Shep called the day 1/3 Thursday. To help with the heat and humidity, we'd shorten each period by a third, drink water for a third of the period and would play with a third less intensity.
Health checks were the priority, so GACU (Great American Clean Up) was on the schedule for all (see https://campskylemar.com/blog-2017/0702/ for full GACU description). Where did the name come from? First time we did the formal checks many years ago was on July 4. The theme worked, and it stuck.
Fact is, it’s all in a name here. Counselors come with regular names like John, Johnny, Jonathan and John Michael and before long turn into Breezy, Shopo, JBJ and Schuetzy. Buildings at Sky II become an MGM Grand, Cupola or Green House (even though they’re all green houses at Sky II).
It’s all about the coolness factor. Would you rather go to Arts & Crafts or to the Hilltop? Science or Yellowhorn? And what’s more fun, “hand sanitizer” or “squirt squirt”?
Clinic Signups are much more fun with a live show (counselor commercials), as opposed to signing up on a computer or piece of paper (see https://campskylemar.com/blog/and-were-off/ for full Clinic Signup description). Sometimes the "show" is pretty basic, but it’s always fun when there’s something unique about the offering.
For example, Adam’s SkyDeck commercial was a straight-forward explanation, but how he packaged his clinic for the week made it unique. His activity is "International Cooking" with each day covering a different country. In addition to cooking a native food, they’ll discuss the country’s history, politics and culture.
Other unique ones included Ash’s "Dangerous Clinic". They’ll play stickball, learn to write their name in code, make a harmonica, skip stones and much more. "Chill on the Hill" is craft projects at Hilltop, with music playing and a relaxing vibe. There’s also "In the Wild" at SkyPines, "Fiddlesticks Tourney", "Ultimate Frisbee", "Soccer Scramble Bag", "All-Terrain Volleyball" and "Paddling Pro Clinic". It’s the first time for each of these.
Those with really clever commercials included "Reading the Classics" with a graduation theme (complete with caps & gowns) and "Tennis Match Play" with a live mini-match that included Ted. There was "3-on-3 Basketball", with counselors who always make everyone laugh. "Baseball Games Galore" had Barney and Lucas reciting, while "Swim Meet Prep" had counselors “swimming” in baby wading pools. Most impressive was the Ski Crew’s rap called “Boat Bros”.
The SkyLinks staff was proud to announce the winner of the Golden Golf Club for the week: Jake F. Jake spends a lot of choice time on the course, and devotes himself to getting better.
We won a U12 hockey game this afternoon in OT, keeping our U12, U13 and U14 teams undefeated all season. Thanks, Coach JB (another nickname).
Also hosted a U10 soccer round robin with several camps competing. Proud to say we finished the day unbeaten. Even prouder to hear we kept it classy all the way. A big thanks to our super-incredible Gordo, the best Director of Soccer in the world!
