Saturday will be the sunniest day of the year, even if it rains. A crowd of several hundred will be reunited with loved ones, while getting a seven-hour glimpse of our Skylemar world.
Ironically, we gear Visiting Day towards those who don’t have visitors. There are quite a few, actually, and that’s how it’s been for the past 71 years. We stick with our regular routine for the most part and try our best to carry on as if the extra dozen adults stopping by the cabin throughout the day is commonplace.
Counselors have been given simple instructions - be yourself. We’re proud of them and hope you will be too.
Speaking of pride…the kids will be showing off tomorrow. There are six scheduled periods, so it’s important that everyone follow the plan. Visitors will be able to cool off in Trickey Pond when their son’s cabin is scheduled.
Lunch will be served for the boys in the Rec Hall as always. Guests will be served outside under the “Big Top”. Please honor this tradition which honestly, truly and positively makes sense. Visiting Day is an emotional one, and a half hour break from “togetherness” is good for all. Plus, the boys get their own Visiting Day Buffet on Sunday.
Rest Hour is best spent under a tree with your son or watching an encore performance of “Aladdin”. Please respect the space of those without visitors, and kindly keep out of the bunk as much as possible.
Also, it would be most helpful if you reminded your son that all treats are communal and will be shared with bunkmates under counselor supervision. We must also be mindful of allergies, and what’s left by Tuesday will be donated to charity.
The staff will be by your side for teary farewells any time before 4:30. It’s hard to say goodbye to those we love, but the Carnival tomorrow night always seems to do the trick.
Heard this today…
Some of the candy didn’t come out so well at a Chocolate Factory period. Holly said, “Well, I guess we’ll have to eat our mistakes.” One of the guys replied, “So I guess mistakes aren’t so bad here at Skylemar.”
Only at 457 Sebago.
