What has two feet, wakes before dawn and goes “babump babump babump”? That would be the younger half of camp on the basketball court, while the older guys still sleep. 5:15 am and many were on the move. The gentle first bugle doesn’t blow until 8, so there’s plenty of time for early morning tennis too.
ESPN may have “Mike & Mike”, but we have The Morning Show with early risers as special guest stars. George and Company broadcast live from The Shack. It’s all about sports, and these guys know what they’re talking about.
Pancakes, then Clean Up, then out on the fields. Soccer, football, hockey and baseball. Lacrosse, golf, archery and tennis. Fishing, volleyball and Yellowhorn. Bunks 1-5 were at the waterfront, for an Opening Day orientation. This included a swim assessment, with the counselors in the water too. That way the teachers on the dock can observe swimming abilities, while counselors in the water make sure all feel strong and encouraged.
Clinic Sign Up’s in the Picnic Grove! That’s when the whole camp gathers, and counselors perform skits about the Clinic Period they’ll be teaching this week. Each camper has a “golden ticket” (a yellow card with their name on it) which they give to the counselor leading the week-long class that he wants to be a part of.
For example, there was “Fierce on the Freddie Pierce Baseball” (our baseball diamond's famous moniker) for pitching, fielding (both throwing and glove-work), and base-running. “Wimbledon Tennis with Ted” focuses on ground strokes. “Wilderness First Aid”, “Waterski Refresher” and “Soccer Tennis” all sounded terrific. "Skylax" will focus on a strong lacrosse foundation to become a better player. “Splish Splash” is a waterfront variety. “A Pirates Life For Me” is beginner sailing. “Mission Possible” is Trainer Poss’s workout program. Diane invited all to come “Chill On The Hill” with any art project you wish at Hilltop. Seven signed up for “Veggie Delight” at Adam’s Skydeck. Hope they share the recipes. “Rockwall Races” rocked the Challenge Course. There’s “Reading Team” for whatever book you wish, and "STB" for those who want to practice for the STB Tournament (which stands for Steal The Bacon….of course). Decisions, decisions!
Drive-in Movie for Evening Activity. The giant outdoor screen showed “Minions”. It was a beautiful night, and sight, seeing all of our guys quietly watching, munching on popcorn and treats.
