It’s was the hottest “Thank You Thursday” we can ever remember. In fact, it may have been the hottest day in Skylemar history - 100 degrees with the heat index. Although we had lots of packing and cleaning to do, we changed the schedule to allow for a dip in the lake. It was lots of fun to have one more afternoon together on Trickey Pond.
Bunk 1’s Lemonade Stand was a huge hit today. They squeezed fresh lemons with the old fashioned juicer that Herb used for his daily oj. It brought back happy memories for those of us who remember Herb’s morning ritual. The kids did a fantastic job, and went through 200 thirst quenching cups in record time.
Nearby was the Appreciation Station. That’s where you write thank you notes to those who you appreciate at camp. When the season’s over they’ll be sent via mail, to brighten someone’s day. Over 400 notes were written!
Video Thank You’s were popular too. You can see a sample of some of the heartwarming messages in our “We Are Grateful” video, to be posted tomorrow.
The thank-you’s continued at the Final Banquet, the most loved night of the year. The meal was extra delicious, and of course we thanked the kitchen staff. If we thought it was hot at 100, their kitchen had to be 120.
Fabulous speeches were given by Bennett E (New Camper), Luke S (Old Camper), Cullen R (New Counselor) and Barney (Old Counselor). Lots of awards and finally, it’s time for what we’ve all been waiting for, “Retrospect”. It’s the spectacular multi-media compellation of the summer, shown on a jumbotron-like screen. Bruce, Andy, Dylan, Leslie, Katie and Yonne spend all season putting this together. It was definitely one of the all-time greatest shows. Stay tuned for how you can watch in September.
The night was lengthy and warm, and several even fell asleep. Others could be heard sobbing, for it’s a bittersweet day tomorrow. We say goodbye to our brothers, while saying hello to those we love at home. Most will be gone on buses and planes in the early morning hours, so flag raising is at 5:30. Sleeping is for next week.
On this final Thank You Thursday of Skylemar 2016, we’re reminded how lucky we are. We have the most beautiful 200 acre office filled with the greatest people in the world. Thank you to our counselors, Senior Staff, maintenance and kitchen. Thank you to those who stayed up until midnight helping with blog pictures, just because they care. Thank you to those rewarded in smiles, like Leslie, Bruce and Aaron, who made this blog writer sound like a Color War sports reporter. Thank you Rich and thank you Norma, for “protecting this house” year round.
Most of all, thank you to our Skylemar parents, for sharing with us our Skylemar stars. May each boy shine with all of his light, all of the time.
