Lots of exciting visitors today, including a tarantula, scorpion, iguana, boa constrictor and Gila monster.
Keeping the attention of 50 boys in an outdoor classroom setting is no easy task, but animal expert “Mr. Drew” had them mesmerized. Not only did he bring unique creatures to watch or touch, but he also enthralled young and old with fascinating animal info. For instance, did you know that tarantulas taste with their feet? Or that iguanas have a third eye that can be found on top of their head?
Lots of facts about poison and saliva too. For instance, the smaller the scorpion the more venomous they are. Also, Gila monsters are extra amazing, because their saliva helps to manage diabetes. Good stuff to know!
Meanwhile, it was the Senior Trip for 50 of our older guys. It’s an annual excursion that they create, so it typically has a lot to do with spending money. The weather was perfect for the waterpark, and then they relaxed with dinner and the movies. They did some shopping at the Maine Mall and Cabela’s, and came back home, safe and sound.
The younger guys went to Sebago Lake State Park. It’s a favorite for all, where you hang at the beach all day, where the water’s really shallow and fun to play in. It was a little disappointing to find out that the snack bar went out of business. However, the boys were happier than ever with a stop afterwards at the Causeway Dairy Bar.
It seemed like all were really “in the groove” today. The campers who arrived recently are more comfortable and at ease, as if they’ve always been here. You could see it at the outdoor “Spirit Night”, which was our Evening Activity.
Here the Skylemar family joined together as a warm community, gave lots of thanks and listened to inspirational words from Shep and counselor Britt. The camp songs were mostly loud and upbeat. But when the song changed to one that was slower and lower, the guys linked arms in friendship as they sang.
It was very clear to all who watched. Skylemar guys truly are the greatest collection in the whole wide world.
