They came from across the country and around the globe. From Maryland to Mexico; Shanghai to Spain. Patiently traveling for hours, they knew that the incredible days ahead would make the journey worthwhile.
When they arrived, it was a sight second to none. Pouring out of buses and cars were the greatest guys in the whole wide world! It happened here today, in the little town of Naples, Maine.
Old friends jumped into the arms of Skylemar brothers, while new friends were welcomed warmly with handshakes and hugs. We’ve waited for days, weeks and months!
Counselors prepared long and hard for this moment. They learned how to teach exciting sports and super fun games, to keep active boys safe, to empathize and mentor, and even how to make a bed. Most importantly, they learned the “Skylemar Way”.
Now it’s time.
3…2…1…BLAST OFF! It’s Camp Skylemar 2017!
The official kickoff happened as it had for 68 years, with spaghetti and meatballs of course. The Rec Hall was electrified with positive vibes. A huge tossed salad, garlic bread and giant chocolate chip cookies were a yummy part of the celebratory meal.
The staff had unpacked earlier, so cabins were ready with cozy beds and all a boy needs. Who would have guessed that college athletes would take such care in crafting welcome signs, labeling towel hooks and thinking about the needs of each in their care?
Just before sunset, the whole camp gathered on the hillside. Shep spoke about our founders Lee and Herb, sharing their inspirational message of kindness and friendship. Campers cheered as each on the staff was introduced.
We sang “Taps” and headed to cabins. Today was amazing, exhausting and exhilarating. Tomorrow the real fun begins!
