Sugar and spice, and everything nice. That’s what the ladies of Skylemar are made of. Each has a specific role at camp, but like a mom, they go above and beyond.
For example, start with our incredible nurses (Julie, Jen, Monica and Jackie) who provide round the clock care for a family of 300. There’s meds to dispense, scrapes to bandage, stories to hear and hugs to give. No question – ours are the best nurses in the world.
Next is Cory who directs the Ropes Course, along with Calla and Francesca. Between the three of them there are pianists, artists, drama assistants, office helpers, child experts and leaders of our fabulous evening activities.
How about Norma, Julie and Amie in the office, who on top of a full administrative load, pack and unpack baggage, serve snow cones and summon the tooth fairy. Need a ____? Lost a _____? How do you ____? These ladies have the answer to pretty much any question you could ever come up with.
Tree’s our Director of Wellness, Marge leads Tutoring, and Dianne is the Director of Art. Holly heads up Yellowhorn, Stephanie’s at golf and Mary’s at sailing. Katie, Leslie and Yonne are the Skyteam Photographers, who take thousands of photos for all to enjoy. But that’s just the beginning. They also read stories, award prizes, inspect cabins and bake cookies. No written job description could capture all that they happily do for our boys.
Speaking of happy, how about our Luci and Lily, who know all about fun. Luci’s at the Ski Dock, and is also in charge of sharing the Skylemar world with parents at home, through social networking posts. Lily’s at the waterfront too, or teaching on the volleyball court, or making the camp smoothies to sneak in a few vegetables. Together they combine for a double period the kids love called Sky Fuel and Bean Boozled.
Lily’s Sky Fuel period introduces the boys to eating for strength and good health. For example, today they made Dinosaur Eggs. It’s two hands full of oats, date paste, wow butter, mango, apricots, cherries, almonds and chia seeds. Lily talks about each ingredient in terms of nutritional value, and guess what? They actually listen. Meanwhile, as the eggs bake…
It’s Bean Boozled with Luci. First you get to play the jelly bean game, which is always a hit. “Skybands” is next where you have to guess the Skylemar word that’s stuck to your fore head. Then it’s a wrap after a game of “Pie In The Face”? Remember that one? Very camp appropriate.
Last but not least are our lovely ladies in the Maintenance Department. Kristin, Brenna and Ilene: Thank you for helping with our messes and keeping camp beautiful. These great gals also go the extra mile, driving someone here and there, retuning a missing item, and all around just trying to please.
Truth is, it takes a pretty tough chick to live and work in a boy’s world. Skyladies never complain about the gross (like trimming toe nails), and take it all in stride. They never slow down, and turn it up when others are tired. Each has a certain twinkle in her eye which says that “I love you”, and a beaming smile when a boy succeeds. In so many ways they’re just like mom.
P.S. As to the day: plenty of field and court sports in the morning. Super hot in the afternoon, so canceled afternoon activities and headed to Trickey Pond for water basketball, water melon and water polo on pink flamingos and inflatable pizza slices. There were motor boat rides and chill time on the Corcls (a round plastic boat). Spray Rides up the hill. That’s a hay ride with a nice refreshing spray of the hose.
