It’s only water. But when it comes down in buckets or is accompanied by rumbles, it does change our plans. Within a half hour of bringing wet kids into the Rec Hall for “Despicable Me” (which even included a real live Minion), the rain cleared leaving the air muggy. Then when we went ahead with the regular schedule, the sky turned black and we had to change the plan. It was back and forth all day, till finally we decided to play it safe and bring the Campfire indoors. So of course it didn’t rain…
Truth is, boys just want to have fun. Inside, outside, on-camp, off-camp. Ask any kid and they’ll tell you that the most fun of all is had with the JC’s.
Who are these JC’s and what makes them fun? This year there are nine “Junior Counselors”: two Pablos, Shuey, Ash, Izzy, Coby, Jake, Ethan and Elijah. What makes them fun is that they like to play. They’re a cross between camper and counselor, and that means they're a whole lot cooler than everyone else.
Loyal and true, the JC’s know Skylemar better than anyone. They’ve experienced every stage of Skylemar, from being a new camper, to The Slant, to 1.5 to Sky II. It’s a year of transition to adulthood, and many JC’s find the experience to be their best summer of all.
This year, each JC lives in a cabin of younger kids and assists the counselor with overall care. In the morning they help with activities, and in the afternoon, they play sports with the senior campers. There are traditional responsibilities now and then (like helping with cookout, scooping ice cream, sorting mail), and occasionally they have a night out.
What makes them extraordinary is how at age 16, each is willing to put away his phone, the internet and his driver’s license to help make Skylemar an amazing place for those other than himself. JC's have a “whatever it takes” attitude and strive above all to make the kids happy.
Need guys to dress up in crazy costumes and make people laugh? Call the JC’s. Have a kid who won’t go to the doctor without someone he loves? Then Ethan’s the man. Need to pick up the mood? Then shout out “pig pile” on any one of them, and the kids will pounce like puppies.
JC’s are the greatest, and we’re happy they’re here. With a big thanks to them, Skylemar is a very joyful place.
